Exploring Nisyros in Greece: The Secret Island of Volcanic Wonders and Timeless Beauty!

Tucked away in the heart of the Aegean Sea, Nisyros is one of those rare Greek islands that still feels like a well-kept secret. With its dramatic volcanic landscapes, picturesque villages, and serene atmosphere, it's the ideal place to escape from the noise of everyday life. A two-day getaway here isn’t just a brief break—it’s an invitation to slow down, breathe deeply, and reconnect with nature and yourself. Nisyros offers a soulful kind of peace, the kind that lingers long after you’ve left its shores.
I visited the island with my family—and, of course, my drone—and in just two days, we managed to see almost the entire island, capturing its stunning landscapes both on camera and in our memories.
The Greek Myth
According to Greek mythology, Nisyros was once part of the island of Kos. During the battle between the Olympian gods and the Giants, the god Poseidon chased the giant Polybotes across the Aegean. To stop him, Poseidon tore off a piece of Kos and hurled it at the fleeing giant, trapping him beneath it. That fragment became the island of Nisyros—and some say the volcano's rumblings are the angry groans of the giant still buried below.
Mandraki – The Heart of Nisyros
Mandraki is the capital and main port of Nisyros. At its center stands the well known chapel of Panagia Spiliani, a cherished spiritual site built into the rockface overlooking the harbor. The chapel dates back to the Byzantine era and is dedicated to the Virgin Mary, known locally as the “Virgin of the Cave.” Legend has it that the site was a refuge for locals during pirate attacks, and it has long been a place of pilgrimage and devotion.
Just above the town rises the impressive medieval castle of the Knights of St. John, built in the 14th century during the period of the Knights Hospitaller’s rule over the Dodecanese. This fortress once served as a crucial defensive stronghold against pirate raids and invaders, its sturdy stone walls bearing witness to centuries of island history.
Today, the castle offers stunning panoramic views of the sea and the island’s volcanic landscape. Its atmospheric courtyards and ancient battlements create a unique venue to host concerts, including performances by the renowned Greek musician Nikos Papazoglou.
Wandering through Mandraki’s narrow alleys, you’ll discover the “Square of the Elders,” a lively gathering spot lined with quaint tavernas and cozy cafes where locals and visitors alike enjoy slow afternoons. As evening falls, the sunset over the sea paints a breathtaking backdrop, making Mandraki the perfect place to soak in the island’s serene beauty.
The active Volcano - an unforgettable experience!
Nisyros is famous for its active volcano, one of the most accessible in Europe. It boasts one of the largest volcanic craters on the continent—an active crater about 300 meters in diameter, with steam vents that release strong sulfurous fumes. Visitors can descend into the crater and feel the earth’s heat beneath their feet, an unforgettable experience that brings you face to face with the island’s fiery heart.
Just above the crater lies the charming village "Nikia", a picturesque spot with narrow alleys, a couple of cozy shops, and a small café famous for its “volcano chocolate” — a warm chocolate cake served melted, with a stunning view overlooking the entire crater. Extra three Villages in Nisyros island worth visiting
Borios is an abandoned village with a charming, rustic tavern that offers stunning views of the surrounding landscape. Its quiet, timeless atmosphere makes it a hidden gem for those seeking tranquility away from the crowds.
Pali is a small coastal settlement known for its quaint little harbor and seaside tavernas. It’s the perfect spot to enjoy fresh seafood while taking in the gentle sea breeze and relaxed island vibes.
Emporios is a small, peaceful village near Mandraki, featuring traditional Cycladic architecture and a quiet atmosphere—perfect for those looking to explore the island’s authentic side.
Swimming in Nisyros
Nisyros offers several beautiful beaches perfect for swimming. Popular spots include the sandy and pebbly shores near Mandraki and the quaint coastal village of Pali, both ideal for a refreshing dip after exploring the island. There’s also a more secluded beach nearby that provides a peaceful retreat away from the crowds.
For a truly unique experience, take a short boat trip to the rocky islet of Gyali, famous for its pumice stone deposits. The crystal-clear waters and unusual volcanic terrain create a spectacular setting for swimming and snorkeling.
When swimming around Nisyros, be sure to bring water shoes to protect your feet from sharp volcanic rocks and pumice stones, especially around Gyali. Early mornings or late afternoons are the best times to enjoy calmer waters and avoid the midday heat.
Hiking on Nisyros
Nisyros offers several hiking trails through volcanic terrain and traditional villages. While some of the main routes—like the path around the volcanic crater and the trails to villages like Nikia—are fairly well-trodden, official trail markings can be sparse or inconsistent in places. It’s recommended to use a detailed map or GPS and, if possible,
Transport on the island
Nisyros Municipality Bus Schedule typically includes routes connecting Mandraki (the main port) to key villages such as Pali, Emporios, and Nikia. For instance, on weekdays, buses depart from Mandraki at 08:00 and 13:00, traveling to Pali, Emporios, and Nikia, and then returning to Mandraki. nisyros.gr

Taste of Nisyros
We fell in love with its hearty cuisine! Don’t miss trying the grilled pork chops and the slow-cooked goat stew—both rich in local flavors. A top spot to enjoy these dishes is Veggos Tavern in Mandraki, known for its authentic home-style cooking.
Other must-try dishes include pitaridia (a local pasta with herbs and cheese), fresh seafood caught daily, and melitinia—sweet cheese pies often enjoyed as a dessert.
For drinks, sample the traditional soumada, a refreshing almond syrup served cold, and kanellada, a warm cinnamon-spiced beverage that’s perfect after a hearty meal.
My family and I had an amazing stay on Nisyros Island. We enjoyed living new experiences together and took every opportunity to bond. At the same time, the island’s unique energy and beautiful surroundings inspired me to capture some incredible photos and create the following video.
