If you’re looking for a summer destination beyond the usual beach holidays, there’s a hidden gem in Lithuania that feels like stepping into a fairytale.
At Pakruojis Manor (Pakruojo dvaras), nature, history, and creativity come together in one of the most unique garden experiences in Europe. Set in a country that is part of the Eurozone, it’s an easy and accessible destination—yet still surprisingly under the radar.
A Manor with Noble Roots
Beyond its gardens, Pakruojis Manor carries a fascinating aristocratic history that reflects the lifestyle of Lithuania’s nobility in the 19th century.
The manor in its current form was built in the early 1800s by the influential Ropp family, one of the most prominent noble families in the region at the time.
At its peak, the manor functioned as a small, self-sufficient community. While the noble family lived in the main palace, the estate included dozens of buildings, such as stables, workshops, mills, and servants’ quarters.
The estate could host dozens of residents and guests at a time, supported by a large number of servants, craftsmen, and workers, while the nearby river and surrounding land played a key role in farming, trade, and daily production.

Today, it remains the largest surviving manor complex in Lithuania, carefully restored to preserve its original charm.
The Gardens in Full Bloom
The true highlight of Pakruojis Manor is its ever-changing gardens, redesigned around a new theme almost every year, making each visit feel completely different from the last. (The exact theme for 2026 is typically announced closer to the season.)

Set within a vast historic park that stretches across dozens of hectares, the gardens are not a single space but a sequence of curated areas that gradually unfold as you move through the estate. Most visitors spend at least 2–4 hours exploring, depending on how deeply they want to experience it.
Rather than focusing solely on local Lithuanian flora, the gardens combine international ornamental plants with a natural, slightly wild aesthetic, creating a landscape that feels both carefully designed and effortlessly organic.
Activities for Everyone
What makes this place truly special is that it’s not only about walking through flowers—it’s a full-day experience.

Interactive activities for children
Cultural events and seasonal festivals
Performances, workshops, and themed experiences
Spaces to relax, explore, and enjoy nature
Whether you’re visiting as a couple, with friends, or as a family, there’s always something happening. It manages to be both peaceful and lively at the same time.
More Than Just Gardens
Beyond its floral displays, Pakruojis Manor offers a layered cultural experience through its historic buildings and interactive spaces.
The estate includes a number of original manor structures that have been preserved or restored, such as the main palace—a classical-style manor house—along with stables, a windmill, workshops, and service buildings that once supported daily life on the estate. Walking through these spaces gives visitors a clear sense of how a 19th-century aristocratic property actually functioned.
Inside some of these buildings, you’ll find small museums and exhibitions, often focused on manor life and aristocratic traditions, local crafts and rural professions, as well as historical interiors and everyday objects.

Depending on the season and the annual theme of the park, the estate also hosts temporary exhibitions and artistic installations, which can include visual art, design elements, and scenographic setups integrated into the gardens themselves—so the “exhibition” is often something you experience as you walk, not only something you view inside a room.
As for the traditional elements of Lithuanian countryside life, they are spread throughout the estate and sometimes presented in specific zones or workshops. This makes the visit feel less like walking through a museum and more like stepping into a living, open-air cultural environment, where history is part of the experience rather than something displayed behind glass.
Planning Your Visit
Located in northern Lithuania, the estate is about 2.5 hours by car from Vilnius, the country’s main international airport hub. Lithuania is part of the Eurozone, so everything is paid in euros, making it a convenient destination for European travelers.
While the estate is open across seasons, summer is the best time to visit if you want to experience the gardens at their fullest and most vibrant, without the unpredictability of spring weather.
Tickets typically range from around 12€ to 18€, depending on the season and the scale of the event, with additional experiences such as workshops or tastings available at an extra cost.
The estate is designed as a full-day experience, with restaurants, cafés, and even accommodation on-site, making it easy to spend several hours—or even stay overnight—without leaving the grounds.
